A Spanish truck driver whose vehicle careered off a dyke, killing a party of seven people and wounding seven others, is being held in jail for another two weeks.

A court in Rotterdam decided to keep the driver in custody pending more police investigation, reports NOS.

He has been charged with causing a traffic accident causing death and serious injury. One of the victims was an unborn baby, who is now being counted among the victims.

The collision happened on Saturday evening at around 6pm in Nieuw-Beijerland, a village in South Holland. The lorry plunged off a road on the dyke and into a group of dozens of people having a barbecue, organised by a local club.

Witnesses told Dutch media the victims ‘did not have a chance’. One of the seven people injured is still reportedly in a serious condition in hospital.

Initial reports suggested the driver did not test positive for alcohol.
