Children will travel for free on public transport from 2027

Currently, children can already travel with a specific subscription for national rail operator NS. In some regions, children also do not have to pay on buses and trams.
The move is part of an effort to encourage more people to use public transport. “It introduces children to public transport at a young age. And it is good for families on a tight budget,” junior infrastructure minister Annet Bertram said in a statement.
Children already travel for free everywhere until the age of 3.
Young travellers will need to be covered by a paying adult, who is allowed to bring three children at a time.
However, the nationwide discount for people over the age of 65 will disappear from 2027.
An unlimited summer rail pass has already been popular since it went on sale in June. Some 175,000 people have bought the €49-a-month pass, which covers off-peak travel on all domestic train services, both NS and regional operators.
