25,000 motorists fined for speeding near roadworks

Some 25,000 people have been fined for speeding near roadworks over the past three months, the AD reports on Thursday.

In total, police have handed out over €2m in fines to drivers who have ignored temporary lower speed limits where roadworks are being carried out.
Motoring organisations have complained the police campaign is aimed at raising money, not boosting safety.
But police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek told the paper the reduced limits were necessary to protect motorists and road workers. Lanes are made narrower, there are extra bends and the emergency vehicles lane disappears when roads are being worked on, he pointed out.
