Holland sees greenhouse gases rise

Greenhouse gas emissions rose by 3% in the Netherlands between 1990 and 2007, according to a study by the national statistics office CBS.

The growth was due largely to increased activity in the transport sector, the study showed.
The CBS figure includes emissions caused by Dutch economic activity at home and abroad and as a result differs from the estimates calculated by the climate agency of the United Nations, which focuses only on greenhouse gases produced in Holland.
According to the UN, emissions in the Netherlands fell by 4% over the same period, putting the country well on track to meet its Kyoto climate treaty goals.
The CBS study showed substantial improvements in energy efficiency in households, industry and the agriculture sector.
