More than 50,000 people kicked off 2023 by taking part in one of the 142 New Year swims which took place nationwide on Sunday.

In Scheveningen, traditionally the biggest, some 12,000 people plunged into the sea at midday.

Despite the unseasonably warm weather, with the temperature hitting 15.5 Celsius at midnight at the De Bilt weather station near Hilversum, the sea was chilly. The air temperature at the seaside resort was 11 Celsius while the sea was just 7 degrees.

The swims were the first in three years. The 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled because of coronavirus restrictions.
