The Dutch national football team was unable to do more than a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in their second game of the World Cup in Qatar.

Cody Gakpo scored for Oranje six minutes in, only for Ecuador to have a goal disallowed for offside shortly before the break. Enner Valencia then scored for Ecuador in the 49th minute.

‘We did not lose and that is important,’ coach Louis van Gaal said after the game. ‘Now we have to work on our possession game.’

A win would have guaranteed the Dutch progressed to round of 16 already. The top two teams in each group will move on and both Ecuador and the Netherlands are on four points from three games.

Oranje’s final game is against Qatar on Tuesday, while Ecuador meet Senegal.
