A family from Emmen who had been holidaying in Sweden brought back more in their luggage than they had counted on – a large, and poisonous, adder that was almost completely black in colour.

The family found the snake once they got home and started unpacking the roof top cargo box, their local animal ambulance said on social media.

Animal ambulance staff were able to remove the snake from its new home in the box while wearing special leather gloves. ‘The adder was not happy at being removed from its nice warm resting place and started biting in the gloves, but without any problem,’ the animal rescue team said.

The snake was taken to a reptile sanctuary where experts will decide what to do with it.

Black adders are found all over Scandinavia and are generally extremely shy, the animal ambulance posting said.
