The Hoofddorp woman police say was abducted on her way to work in Beverwijk on Wednesday is being used as a pawn in a conflict between international drugs gangs, Dutch police said on Sunday.

So far six people have been arrested in connection with her disappearance, police said.

They have also confirmed that other countries are now involved in the investigation, but declined to say which.

The six men who have been arrested are aged 37 to 17. One comes from Belgium, the rest were picked up in the Netherlands.

The woman left her home in Hoofddorp on Wednesday morning heading for work but never arrived. Her car was found later in nearby Nieuw-Vennep.
