Dutchman Anish Giri has won the 85th edition of the Tata Steel chess tournament for the first time in his career.

Giri, who was a child chess prodigy,  takes the title over from world champion Magnus Carlsen, who has won the event eight times.

‘It is an extremely special victory, particularly as it is in my home country,’ Giri said after the event.

Giri won the title after beating Romania’s Richard Rapport in the final and 13th round, helped by Dutchman Jorden van Foreest’s victory over Uzbekistan teenager Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who had been leading the competition.
