New coronavirus cases top 10,000 for the first time since July
The number of positive coronavirus tests in the Netherlands topped 10,000 in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, the highest figure since July 18.
In total, the public health institute RIVM recorded 10,272 positive tests, a rise of 1,102 on Wednesday’s figure.
There have only been more positive tests on 15 days since the pandemic started 20 months ago, broadcaster NOS reported. The total number of positive tests in the past seven days has now reached over 58,000, an average of 8,400 a day.
The regional health boards are currently carrying out around 60,000 tests a day, giving a positive test rate of around 16%, which is slightly down on the previous week.
Hospital
The number of coronavirus patients in hospital rose marginally overnight to 1,237. Of them 273 are in an intensive care ward, up 23 on Wednesday’s total.
The surge in coronavirus cases in the Netherlands has now tipped the risk warning issued by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to dark red in eight of the 12 Dutch provinces.
