Do you feel at home in NL? Share your thoughts in a new survey

The International Community Advisory Platform, set up five years ago to find out more about what makes the country’s foreign workforce tick, has launched a new survey focusing on feeling at home in the Netherlands.
The survey has been commissioned by IN Amsterdam but is open to everyone in the country. The aim is to find out what internationals consider important when it comes to feeling settled in the Netherlands and what problems they experience.
‘For example, we’d like to know how easy people find it to make friends and how important it is to learn Dutch,’ says ICAP board member Deborah Valentine. ‘We’re also asking for people’s experience of discrimination and if they plan to vote in next year’s local government elections.’
The results of the survey will be used to draw up recommendations for local councils and to highlight any specific problems which people come up against.
‘The international community and expats are often talked about, but we hope to give them a voice by busting some of the myths,’ says Valentine. ‘So we’ve been able to show, for example, that around 10% of international workers earn so little they would be entitled to live in social housing, and that most people prefer to send their children to a Dutch school.’
The results of the new survey will be published in the autumn.
