A 28-year-old man from Germany has been questioned about the death of 14-year-old Tamar, the Marken girl who left her home after a row about bedtimes and was killed by a car.

The man is the owner of the grey Mazda which is now thought to have hit the girl, leaving her for dead on the edge of the road on the mainland.

The man was questioned on Wednesday and came to the Netherlands voluntarily, following the intervention of a Dutch lawyer. He is officially suspected of leaving the scene of an accident, but not of causing the girl’s death.

He has not been held in custody because the lesser charge does not require remand, police said in a statement.

Tamar’s family have been informed and the police say they will give no further information until their investigation has been completed.
