Corona crime report: almost 300 criminal cases and 15,000 fines since lockdown
Since the start of the lockdown, there have been 294 recorded ‘corona crimes’ ranging from spitting at police officers and claiming to have corona to shoplifters threatening staff.
The public prosecution reported on Thursday that police officers were a victim of a third of the crimes, and 220 of the alleged miscreants have already appeared before the courts.
Meanwhile, there have been 22,820 reported violations of the corona regulations and 15,530 fines have been issued. A fifth of people have protested the fines.
From an international perspective, the number of penalties doled out in the Netherlands has been very modest. In the first six weeks of lockdown, according to the NOS, France issued 915,000 corona fines and Spain 837,000.
