Thai football team rescue celebrated in the Dutch media
Dutch media rejoiced on Tuesday afternoon as a Thai children’s football team and their coach were all safely rescued from a flooded cave complex in Northern Thailand.
The story has transfixed the Netherlands – as well as the rest of the world – after the 12 boys and their coach were lost inside the Tham Luang park cave complex more than two weeks ago.
International rescue teams had worked around the clock after the boys were discovered by British divers, to try to drain the caves enough to rescue them. One Thai navy diver died last Friday while supporting the mission.
A team of Dutch water specialists from Friesland travelled to Thailand to support the drainage efforts, while Elon Musk left a mini-submarine ‘made of rocket parts & named Wild Boar after [the] kids’ soccer team’.
Reporting from the site, with another 1,000 journalists from around the world, broadcaster NOS said on Monday that the story was like a film script – fortunately, with a mostly happy ending. The rescue, called ‘the finale‘ by the AD, led the Dutch news agenda on Tuesday afternoon.\
The first three children brought out this morning were treated first in a field hospital before they were stable enough to be transported to a normal hospital, reported the NOS from Thailand. Their coach, because he said he felt responsible for the misadventure, was reportedly rescued last.
The boys and their coach have now all been taken to hospital after the three-day evacuation that was a battle against heavy, predicted rain.
