Dutch flower trade expects to sell 300 million blooms in Valentine’s rush

The Dutch flower trade is gearing up for one of its busiest weekends of the year as Valentine’s Day lovers snap up 300 million roses, tulips and orchids.
Royal FloraHolland, the umbrella body for the industry, said its profits for the second week of February were likely to be around €125 million, compared to €80 million in a normal week, while sales almost doubled.
The biggest export markets are the UK, Germany and France. Tulips and roses are by far the most popular flowers, accounting for 120 million and 100 million blooms respectively.
Around 60% of British and French buyers choose red roses, while mixed bouquets are the most popular gift for Dutch and German flower lovers.
Orchids are the most popular plant, with 3.5 million sold, followed by potted roses (1.5 million) and anthuriums (500,000).
