Diplomats are concerned about International Criminal Court
Diplomats in The Hague are concerned about the way the Netherlands is acting in its role as host of the International Criminal Court, website nu.nl reports on Monday.
The Netherlands is set to stop funding the court’s temporary accommodation at the end of 2012, which costs some €6m a year.
But the new permanent location in Scheveningen will not be completed until 2015 at the earliest, which means the court is likely to be hit by a funding shortfall and extra costs.
‘The Dutch are placing the court in a difficult position,’ one diplomat told the website.
Symbolic rent
The website says it is customary to charge international organisations symbolic rents – such as Italy does to the UN’s farming and food organisation FAO.
‘The Netherlands is profiting most from the ICC,’ another diplomat said. Internal calculations show last year the Dutch economy benefited from the presence of the court by €66m.
Diplomats expect the Netherlands to make a gesture of good faith otherwise the country’s position as ‘legal capital of the world’ could be damaged when it comes to applying to host new international organisations, nu.nl says.
