Row jeopardizes Schiphol airport expansion

Amsterdam Schiphol airport and the Dutch airlines are involved in a conflict that could jeopardize further expansion of the airport.

The airlines say Schiphol is not keeping to agreements made in 2008 that business traffic and freight would have precedence over holiday flights, reports the Financieele Dagblad, quoting anonymous sources in the sector.
According to the airlines, Schiphol is allowing too many foreign companies, such as Emirates from Dubai and the Spanish Vueling, to operate from the airport, putting its mainport function at risk, says the paper.

The main complainant is Dutch airline KLM which is facing competition from Emirates, whose Airbus A380 made its first landing at Schiphol last Wednesday. The company is to offer daily flights between Amsterdam and Dubai.
KLM said last week it has no plans to add the A380 to its fleet at present.
The disagreement within the sector threatens a billion euro investment in the expansion of Schiphol, for which the airlines would provide part of the financing, says the FD.
Airport officials met on Tuesday with representatives of KLM and the economic affairs ministry to discuss their differences, according to the FD.
