Olympics: Surfer Dorian van Rijsselberghe collects his gold medal
Surfer Dorian van Rijsselberghe was officially declared gold medal winner in the RS-X class at the Olympic regatta in Weymouth on Tuesday afternoon.
The Dutchman won the competition on Monday having won six of the nine races with just two more to go. He had accumulated 23 points at that stage, with a maximum of 18 points still available.
Van Rijsselberghe had to take part in the final race or risk being suspended for unsportsmanlike behaviour. And rather than go through the motions, the 23-year-old from Texel went all out and won.
The Brit Nick Dempsey won silver and the Pole Przemyslaw Miarczyski took the bronze.
The win puts the Netherlands at 10th in the medal table with four gold, three silver and four bronze.
