Dutch rider makes final Olympic appearance on medal-winning horse

Anky van Grunsven, the Netherlands’ most successful dressage rider, made her final appearance on her horse Salinero at this year’s Olympic Games in London.

Her performance helped the Dutch team to take the bronze medal, but she only managed 6th place in the individual competition.
The 44-year-old dressage specialist has been riding Salinero since the early 1990s and announced before this year’s Olympics she would be retiring him after the games.
The pair began their winning streak in 2000 in Sydney by winning the individual gold medal. It was the first of a hat-trick at three successive Olympics, with the pair successfully defending their title in 2004 in Athens and in 2008 in Beijing.
Van Grunsven has not yet decided if she will take part in the next Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
