Provincial roads need improvement: ANWB

The safety of provincial roads needs improving, motoring organisation ANWB said on Thursday. Introducing better road design would greatly decrease the number of traffic accidents.

The organisation was commenting on the results of research carried out in the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel, reports website nu.nl.
All the roads in both provinces were inspected using a special vehicle that takes paranoramic videos of the road and its surroundings.
The results show that 66% of the roads in Gelderland and 75% in Overijssel score just two out of the five stars needed for safety.
According to the organisation, roads should be designed so that a steering mistake by a driver does not lead directly to serious consequences. This can be done by creating a wide shoulder down the middle of the road, extra crash barriers and safer road crossings.
22% of traffic accidents occur on provincial roads, says the organisation.
