Prime minister to tender resignation to the queen: media reports

Prime minister Mark Rutte will this afternoon tender his resignation to queen Beatrix following the collapse of talks aimed at restoring order to the government’s finances.

Nos television, ANP and website nu.nl all quote sources saying Rutte will update parliament after his meeting with the queen.
The cabinet met for 1.5 hours on Monday morning to discuss the political crisis following Geert Wilders’ decision to pull out of austerity negotiations on Saturday.
Ministers declined to comment on the meeting afterwards but said they were disappointed by the weekend’s events.
According to the state information service, Rutte will meet the queen at 14.00 hours and then make a formal statement. The prime minister said at the weekend new elections would appear to be on the cards.
