Dutch population grew by 70,000 last year
The Dutch population reached 16.7 million in January 2012, an increase of 70,000 on 2011, as more EU citizens moved to the Netherlands, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.
In total, 160,000 people moved to the Netherlands last year, up marginally on 2010. Of these, 40% came from another EU country, the CBS said.
At the same time, 134,000 people left the Netherlands, up 13,000 on a year ago. One third of those leaving is a second-generation immigrant, the CBS said.
The birth rate was relatively stable in 2011 at 179,000, as was the death rate at 136,000.
