Angolan youth Mauro applies for student visa
Mauro Manuel, the 18-year-old Angolan youth threatened with deportation, has applied for a student visa to stay in the country, children’s rights organisation Defence for Children said on Friday.
The student visa application was seen as a compromise after parliament voted narrowly against granting the youth a residency permit, even though he has lived here since 2003.
Christian Democrats suggest the student visa option after voting against residency.
A majority of MPs later backed a motion calling on immigration minister Gerd Leers to allow the boy to apply for the visa in the Netherlands. Student visas normally have to be applied for in the country of origin.
Mauro is currently attending a vocational college (mbo).
