Dam ‘screamer’ returns to court

The man who caused panic on last year’s Remembrance Day by screaming during the two minutes silence on Amsterdam’s Dam Square is to appear in court on Thursday.

He faces three charges: disturbing the peace, causing physical damage and assaulting the queen.
The 39-year-old homeless man told the Volkskrant in an interview on Thursday it was dreadful people were injured in the stampede following his scream, but that was not his fault. ‘That happened because someone shouted ‘bomb’ and a girl began to scream,’ he said.
He explained he was drunk at the time and had no idea it was Remembrance Day. He became cross because his way was blocked. ‘If I can’t scream we might as well forget Remembrance Day. We live in a free country,’ he told the paper.
He was held in custody for five weeks following the incident but was then picked up again for trying to stick posters on the national monument. During this year’s Remebrance Day he was in jail for theft.
