Want a second degree? It pays to shop around says the Volkskrant
Students who want to take a second degree after successfully completing a first one would be well advised to shop around on price, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.
The government has abolished fixed fees and financing for second degrees, allowing universities to set their own prices.
For example a psychology bachelors degree at Amsterdam’s VU or UvA costs €9,000 a year, but only €5,100 a year in Leiden.
And a mathematics masters degree in Utrecht costs €17,700 a year, but just €9,813 in Nijmegen.
Cost price
Each university has its own system of calculating prices, the paper says. Some base the fees on the amount they used to receive from the government, others use a cost price analysis.
Every year, some 33,000 students apply to take a second degree, while 7,000 study for a second masters.
Student lobby group SCAU is planning to take legal action against eight universities for charging excessive fees.
