Former PM wants more power for Brussels

The Netherlands must take the lead in the discussion on reforming the eurozone, former prime minister Wim Kok told the Financieele Dagblad in an interview on Thursday.

Kok, who was prime minister between 1994 and 2002, said it is ‘inevitable’ that more coordination of financial and economic policy in euro countries will move to Brussels.
There must also be open debate about the conditions that must be met if the eurozone is considering issuing euro bonds in the future, he told the paper.
‘I think the brain-power and creativity of the Dutch people is vital in this phase. We should not just trail after France and Germany, but take the lead with our own ideas and proposals,’ he said.
