Dutch Srebrenica commander ‘prepared for court appearance”

The former head of Dutch armed forces who were protecting the enclave of Srebrenica from Bosnian Serbs during the Yugoslavia civil war has told a television programme he accepts he may have to appear in court.

The Hague district court ruled recently that the Dutch state can be held responsible for the death of three men who were killed in the Srebrenica massacre, one of whom worked for the Dutch army in Bosnia.
The ruling clears the way for compensation payments to families of the men, who were ordered to leave the army compound.
Over 8,000 men and boys were murdered and buried in mass graves when the enclave was over-run.
Asked on television show Nieuwsuur if he expected to be summoned to explain events in court, Karremans said: ‘Yes, I do consider it a possibility… in retrospect, one took the wrong decision. And those ‘ones’ are people who can and may take decisions on my behalf.’
