VVD sees provincial vote as crucial, campaign as national
There will be problems if the new government does not control a majority of votes in the senate after the provincial elections, VVD health minister Edith Schippers says in an interview with the Volkskrant.
If the senate becomes political and starts voting down cabinet legislation, the situation will become ‘unworkable’, Schippers said.
The paper says she is the first minister to focus so directly on the importance of the new senate, which will be sworn in on June 1.
Minority
The minority government of the VVD and CDA and alliance partner PVV do not have a majority of seats in the senate. This already led the government to delay its plans to increase value-added tax on theatre tickets by six months.
The PVV is not represented in the senate but is fielding candidates in every province. The results of the provincial elections on March 2 determine the make-up of the upper house of parliament.
The VVD said on Wednesday it is approaching the provincial vote with a national campaign. Loek Hermans, who leads the VVD in the senate, will take part in important debates on behalf of the party.
National
‘We want to make sure the cabinet can make progress over the next four years. And we need a majority in the senate to ensure that,’ campaign leader Charlie Aptroot said.
The party is campaigning on three themes: the economy, public safety and accessibility. No deals have been made with the CDA and PVV about not attacking each other’s policies during the campaign, Aptroot said.
