Van Vollenhoven steps down at safety council

Pieter van Vollenhoven stepped down on Tuesday as chairman of the safety research council. He is succeeded by former counter terrorism chief Tjibbe Joustra, reports the Volkskrant.


Van Vollenhoven, who is over 70 and not eligible for re-election, headed the investigation into the Schiphol fire in 2005 which killed eleven illegal immigrants being held for deportation. He was also in charge of investigations into railway safety and the Turkish Airlines crash of 2009.
He is married to queen Beatrix’s sister Margriet.
