No gold, but silvers and bronzes in European allround skating
Dutch speed skaters missed out on the gold medals at the European speed skating championships in Italy at the weekend, but dominated the rest of the rankings.
Ireen Wüst came second to Martina Sabliková of the Czech Republic. Marrit Leenstra, who won the Dutch national allround title in December, was third.
The other two Dutch competitors, Diane Valkenburg and Jorien Voorhuis, were fourth and fifth.
Mens’ event
In the men’s event, Jan Blokhuijsen narrowly lost out to Russia’s Ivan Skobrev. Koen Verweij won bronze and Wouter Olde Heuvel was fourth.
Defending champion Sven Kramer is out of competition all season through injury.
The men’s competition involves races of 500m, 1,500m, 5km and 10km, the women’s 500m, 1,500m, 3km and 5km.
