Minister to look for alternatives to annual boar hunt
Farm minister Henk Bleker is to look into alternatives to the annual wild boar hunt in the central Veluwe region under pressure from MPs.
Every year, some 80% of the boar population is killed in an effort to keep numbers to around 800 – which is the maximum some experts say the region can sustain.
But MPs say shooting is failing to keep the numbers down effectively and want the government to look for other options.
The boar population is the responsibility of Gelderland province, which claims the animals are a major nuisance on farms and in gardens, and are a traffic hazard.
