EU audit office not interested in controlling budgets, says former member

Members of the EU chamber of audit were for years involved in irregularities and financial fraud, the former Dutch representative says in an interview with the Volkskrant.

Maarten Engwirda, who was a member of the chamber for 15 years and retired in January, accuses former colleagues of attempting to hide financial irregularities and the chamber as a whole of not being interested in proper budgetary controls.
In 2005, the chamber agreed to amend its methods. Since 2008, when the changes came into effect, the chamber has been much more effective, he said.
