VVD senators to oppose tax rise on theatre tickets
Senators from the ruling VVD Liberal party are to try to overturn the planned increase in value-added tax on theatre tickets, the NRC reports on Monday, quoting party sources.
Senators say the move is over-hasty and bad management but will also lead to unfair competition because circuses are not affected.
The increase in tax from 6% to 19% is included in new tax legislation which will be debated in the senate on Tuesday. The section dealing with theatre tickets is on the agenda for December 14.
But NRC politicial journalist Pieter van Os says the senators are not likely to vote against the measure which would hurt the minority coalition government.
‘They will be highly critical of the measure on Tuesday, but will not let the cabinet collapse,’ Van Os said.
