Slightly fewer murders in 2010
There have been 170 murders in the Netherlands so far this year, down eight on 2009, according to the annual murder count by Elsevier magazine.
Particularly noteworthy was the number of murder/suicides – in which a person killed one or more members of his family and then him or herself. These incidents claimed 22 murder victims in 2010, compared with an average nine in recent years.
The murder rate in Amsterdam has halved, from 32 to 16. In Rotterdam, there were 14, compared with 20 in 2009. In Utrecht there were no murders and the rate was stable at seven in The Hague.
