Rotterdam council official calls for Benelux ‘eastern European’ summit

Rotterdam council executive Hamit Karakus has called on 13 cities in the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium to hold a conference about dealing with the influx of central and eastern Europeans this summer, the Telegraaf reports.

Karakus’ spokeswoman said all 13 cities – Luxemburg, Esch, Gent, Antwerp, Brussels, Charleroi Ghent, Liege, Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, Breda and Dordrecht – all have similar problems.
The ‘flood’ of Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians to already deprived areas is an issue because many end up in poor housing or being exploited at work and fail to integrate into society properly, the spokeswoman is quoted as saying.
