Reprieve for village schools with falling pupil numbers

Village schools with fewer than the legally required 23 pupils will no longer automatically have to close their doors, the education ministry said on Wednesday.

The schools can stay open if there is good reason to believe pupil numbers will increase in the near future and that the school is performing well.
Schools in rural parts of Friesland, Groningen and Zeeland are particularly prone to closure as families move to the cities
