Limburg mayors fear knock-on effect of Eindhoven ‘weed pass’

If the government goes ahead with plans to introduce special passes for marijuana users in Noord Brabant province, cannabis cafes in Limburg should be included as well, according to local mayors quoted in the NRC.

If they are not included, the problems in Eindhoven and elsewhere will simply move south, the mayors said during a meeting with justice minister Ivo Opstelten.
Opstelten is planning to fast track the introduction of the ‘weed pass’ in parts of Noord-Brabant in an effort to cut down on drug related violence.

More police

Nevertheless, the mayors say they will need extra police support because the closure of so-called coffee shops to tourists will lead to more illegal street dealing.
‘In addition, most criminality centres on cultivation,’ Heerlen mayor Paul Depla told the paper. ‘That is where the emphasis should be. The weed pass does not solve anything.’
Next week the European court of justice will rule on a case brought by a Maastricht coffee shop owner who says the ban on tourists breaks EU rules.
