600 stranded on train as overhead cable breaks

A train carrying 600 passengers was stuck in the middle of fields between Purmerend and Zaandam north of Amsterdam for several hours on Tuesday because the overhead cables had come down.

Travellers were not allowed to leave the train and the doors were kept closed because of the danger posed by the cables. The train was eventually shunted to safety by a diesel train.
Train services between the two towns have been halted while the cable is fixed.
