Male interns earn more than females

Young men on work experience programmes earn an average €184 a month, while female students get just €158, according to research by the FNV trade union federation’s youth wing, website nu.nl reports.

‘The difference can partly be explained because women work in other areas, such as the care sector where pay is less,’ said chairman Jeroen de Glas. ‘But it does not explain everything.’
Students with an ethnic minority background earn around €157 a month, €13 less than white students, the survey shows.
No pay
Some students do not get any payment at all but have been forced to give up part time jobs because of time pressures in order to take up an internship.
‘They report having to operate as part of the team but for no money. Some feel they are being exploited,’ De Glas said.
The union wants a minimum payment of €250 a month for work experience students.
