First day of winter to be bitterly cold

The strong easterly winds will make it feel bitterly cold on Wednesday, first official day of the meterological winter, the KNMI weather bureau said on Tuesday.

Although the temperature will be around -5 Celsius, it will feel closer to -15, the KNMI said.
On the IJsselmeer lake, the winds will be storm force at times.
While the astronomical winter begins with the winter equinox around December 21, the meterological winter covers December, January and February, when temperatures are lowest.
In Amsterdam, mayor Eberhard van der Laan has issued a ban on homeless people sleeping outside during the freezing temperatures. People who resist can be forced to go to a shelter, the Telegraaf reported.
The city council has made 224 extra beds available, taking the total to 374. Rotterdam has also set up extra beds.
