US disappointed at terrorist’s release from jail after six years

The US is ‘extremely disappointed’ that a Dutch court has freed Wesam al-Delaema, who was sentenced to jail in America for 25 years on terrorism charges.

‘We are extremely disappointed in the Rotterdam district court’s decision to release Wesam al-Delaema from prison after serving less than six years,’US justice department spokeswoman Laura Sweeney told reporters.
‘We strongly disagree with any assertion or conclusion that the conditions under which Delaema was held in custody in the United States – which were identical to those of other inmates – justified shortening the length of his prison term in the Netherlands,’ Sweeney said.
The Netherlands only agreed to deport Wesam al-Delaema to face charges on the condition he be allowed to serve out his sentence in the Netherlands.
Judges in Rotterdam on Wednesday converted the US sentence into an eight-year jail term. Given the time he was held in jail before his trial, Al-Delaema is now eligible for release.
Al-Delaema was found guilty of conspiring to plant roadside bombs in Iraq. He had videotaped himself and others showing off roadside bombs they said they would use to kill Americans.
