Leading author Harry Mulisch dies
One of the Netherlands’ most important post World War II authors, Harry Mulisch. has died of cancer at the age of 83, his publisher De Bezige Bij said on Sunday.
Mulisch is considered one of the greatest modern Dutch writers along with Gerard Reve and Willem Frederik Hermans. His work includes novels, poems, plays and philosophical pieces.
A frequent theme in his work is the Second World War. His 1982 novel De Aanslag (The Assault), has been translated into 25 languages and the film won an Oscar as best foreign film.
His novel De ontdekking van de Hemel (1992) was filmed in 2001 as The Discovery of Heaven by Jeroen Krabbé, and starred Stephen Fry.
