‘Actor’s suicide leads to more calls for help’
The suicide of successful actor Antonie Kamerling has led to a surge of requests for help to the national suicide prevention helpline, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.
Five times as many calls as normal are being made to the helpline, a spokesman told the paper.
Some 1,500 people kill themselves in the Netherlands every year. Clinical psychology professor Ad Kerkhof told the paper he expects a peak in cases to follow from Kamerling’s death.
‘He was young, good looking and successful,’Kerkhof said. ‘People ask themselves ‘if he can’t be helped, what help is there for me?’.’
Kamerling, 44, killed himself last week, leaving his wife and two children. He had suffered from depression for years.
