CDA meeting continues Wednesday, coalition talks in crisis
Christian Democrat MPs are to continue their crucial discusssions about the coalition talks on Wednesday after failing to reach agreement after seven hours of debate on Tuesday.
The crisis meeting was halted shortly after midnight, with MPs still divided about whether to continue negotiations on forming an alliance with the anti-Islam PVV.
Sources told various newspapers Ab Klink, caretaker health minister and party leader Maxime Verhagen’s chief aide at the talks, is no longer supporting the link up.
Four weeks
The right-wing VVD Liberals, CDA and Geert Wilders’ PVV have been in discussions for nearly four weeks.
They aim to draw up two agreements, one covering economic policy which Wilders will support and one covering other policy areas which Wilders will agree not to use to bring down the government. The three parties have already agreed to ‘respect’ each others differences of opinion on Islam.
The CDA talks are due to resume at midday.
Verhagen told reporters it is good thing to sleep on the arguements for a night. ‘We are trying to carry out a decent discussion,’ Verhagen said, refusing to go into details.
Concerns
CDA chairman Henk Bleker said he was ‘somewhat uneasy’ and had a number of ‘concrete concerns’.
A string of senior CDA politicians, including several former prime ministers, have already called for the talks to be scrapped.
The Netherlands held its general election on June 9, in which CDA support almost halved. The party now has 21 seats in parliament. The VVD has 31 seats and the PVV 24, giving the right-wing alliance a majority of just one in the 150 seat house.
