Some 17,500 first year students are unable to use their travel discount card properly because of mistakes in the production process, Nos tv reports on Tuesday.

The problem means the special student ov-chipkaart is not recognised by some scanners.
Students are being sent a letter explaining the problem which they can show ticket inspectors if stopped while the problem is being investigated.
They can also claim back any costs they have made.
