The police found evidence of a break-in during an investigation in 2006. Now forensic adviser Bas van den Heuvel has presented a personal investigation in which he shows how careless behaviour by the burglars could have caused the spark that spread throughout SE Fireworks’ storage depot.
According to Van den Heuvel in local newspaper TC Tubantia on Tuesday, the traces left during the break-in have not been analysed before.
Police are currently carrying out a new investigation into the explosion, the results of which are expected at the end of August.
The blast injured nearly 1,000 people and completely destroyed the Roombeek area of Enschede.
