Wintry weather set to continue

The freezing temperatures and snow falls are set to continue well into next week at least, according to the KNMI weather bureau.

With a chilly northeast wind adding to the problems, it will feel as cold as -10 Celsius on Friday, the KNMI said. Although the weekend will be slightly warmer, the strong winds will boost the wind chill factor to -15 Celsius.
Snow in the south east on Saturday morning will spread to the rest of the country by the afternoon. Temperatures will dip again early next week, with – 12 Celsius forecast for Wednesday night.
More frost
The chance of the frost continuing past Wednesday is put at between 70% and 80% on the KNMI website.
The KNMI told Trouw that the Netherlands has not had such a severe winter for 30 years. ‘Up to now it has not been terribly cold but we have had an awful lot of snow. You need to go back to the winter of 1978 to find similar weather,’ climate expert Rob Sluijter told the paper.
Sluijter said the continuing snowfalls are due to a high pressure area over Greenland which is blocking warmer westerly winds from reaching western Europe. ‘It will continue for at least 10 days,’ Sluijter said.
