The website was launched with great media coverage on Tuesday in an effort to reach a broader public than the traditional wanted posters in police stations.
Belgian national Franky Eeckhout is wanted in the Netherlands for raping two underage girls but was allowed home while the trial took place and escaped. He was sentenced in his absence to three years six months in jail, the paper said.
The public prosecution department admitted on Wednesday Eeckhout had been in jail since October 2008 for a variety of offences.
It is unclear why the Belgian authorities failed to inform the Netherlands he had been picked up, even though an international arrest warrant had been issued for him.
