Snow causes major traffic problems (update)

Overnight snow falls of up to 10cm in the north caused serious traffic problems on the roads and railways particularly in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.

Up to 35 cm of snow fell in parts of Groningen, although much of the country had just a few centimeters.
With jams totalling 671 km, Thursday is set to be the worst day for traffic congestion this year, the ANWB motoring organisation said.
In the morning traffic ground to a halt completely around Utrecht after a lorry tipped over on the A12, leading to a partial road closure.
The A7 between Heerenveen and Groningen was only passable with difficulty and there was slow moving traffic on many other roads. At least 25 lorries have skidded off the roads in the northern provinces.
Driving on the A28 between Groningen and Assen is extremely difficult because of drifting caused by strong winds, the ANWB said.
Elsewhere motorists are being warned about icy roads with temperatures unlikely to rise above freezing on Thursday and Friday.
More snow is expected to fall during Thursday evening and the KNMI weather bureau warns that thick mists will develop in Noord Holland province.
Meanwhile, the Financieele Dagblad reports that demand for skates at the Netherlands two skate factories Zanstra in Joure and Viking in Almere has exploded since the start of the cold snap.
However, the first formal skating races on natural ice was cancelled because the ice was not thick enough, the skating association KNSB said. The first marathon will take place in Haaksbergen on Friday.
