The DNA of some 12,000 youngsters aged 12 to 17 is held in the national data bank, according to child rights organisation Defence for Children.

Defence for Children used freedom of information laws to get the figures from the national forensic institute. The data bank contains a total of 91,000 DNA profiles.
The DNA of everyone over the age of 12 who commits a crime with a potential jail term of at least four years is put into the data bank.
Most youngsters’ DNA has been taken for mild offences such as fighting and arson, which are usually punished by community service, the organisation said.
